One of the most photographed lighthouses in America, Nobska Lighthouse, in Falmouth's Village of Woods Hole, is located on Cape Cod's southwestern coast overlooking the island of Martha's Vineyard. It was originally built in 1828 to guide mariners away from shoals off Woods Hole, Mass. The present day 42-ft. tower, keeper's quarters and oil house were built in 1876 to replace the original dwelling with lantern room on top. The original 4th order Fresnel lens is still utilized, but was automated in 1985. Nobska Light today serves as the home for the Group Commander of the Woods Hole Coast Guard Base and is maintained by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-2.
